A Boy and His Blob: Retro Collection - LRG Blog

A boy and His Blob Retro CollectionImagine this: it’s 1989, and you’re sitting two feet from the TV screen with an NES controller in your hand. Your mom just yelled from the kitchen, “Your eyes will cross if you keep sitting that close to the screen!” A song reminiscent of Indiana Jones blares triumphantly, and the title rolls up on the screen. Here you are, a Boy on the brink of a huge adventure with a newly found friend — a blob from the planet of Blobolonia. It is up to this unlikely friendship (and your mad controller skills) to save Blob’s home planet from the evil Emperor, who will stop at nothing to keep the candy-loving Blobolonians from their sweets.

Now remember that it's actually 2023, and instead, you’re holding a PlayStation 5 controller. Maybe you’re still two feet from the TV, but it's more likely you’re sitting on the couch and squinting at the words because you don’t want to go get your glasses. Regardless, the Boy and his best friend, Blob, are on your screen, and your mission, should you choose to accept it, is still to save Blobolonia using the best weapon you’ve got — jelly beans. This fall, Ziggurat Interactive with Limited Run Games’ Carbon Engine™, is proud to bring A Boy and His Blob™: Retro Collection to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 on October 17, 2023, and PC coming shortly thereafter on Steam and GOG.

The Retro Collection is a two-episode saga, including the original A BOY AND HIS BLOB: TROUBLE ON BLOBOLONIA (Nintendo Entertainment System™) and THE RESCUE OF PRINCESS BLOBETTE (Nintendo Game Boy™), that will lead you on many exciting adventures with delicious surprises and comical characters.

From the creator of Pitfall!, A Boy and His Blob: Trouble on Blobolonia is a puzzle platformer where a Boy discovers an alien blob-like creature seeking to save his planet of Blobolonia from an evil emperor. The two team up with a plan to feed the candy-loving Emperor the worst of all things — VITAMINS! You set off armed with 14 jelly beans, each one transforming the blob into a different tool or asset to traverse the map.

To make it easier on the player, the developer used mnemonic devices to help you remember what each jelly bean does. “Tangerine Trampoline” has a rhythm to it, and the punch flavor makes the blob into a hole, a play on the word “Hole Punch.” The fan favorite of course is the Ketchup bean, placed into the game because sometimes the AI-programmed blob would get stuck in the environment, and the bean would allow him to “catch up.”
Released only a year later, The Rescue of Princess Blobette brought the adventures of Boy and Blob to Game Boy. Using the same style of gameplay, the two set off on an adventure to rescue the princess from impending doom at the hands of the antagonistic Alchemist within Blobolonia’s Royal Castle.

The Retro Collection brings these two delightful games together in both the US and Japanese versions. With modern-day quality-of-life upgrades like trophies (on PS4/5), filters to change the appearance of the game, and save states so that when those pesky worms take you down, you don’t have the 80’s experience of starting alllllllll the way from the beginning.

Get your jelly bean fix starting October 17, 2023 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch.
