Sonic X Shadow Generations: The Movie that Saved a Franchise

It was almost Game Over for Sonic

As mentioned last week, production of the Sonic X Shadow figures remains on schedule which means no updates are usually good updates. As we get closer to the end of production, we can provide more details on when the statues will ship and start hitting your mailboxes.

In the meantime, did you know that the 2020 Sonic the Hedgehog may have actually saved everyone’s favorite Blue Blur from disappearing into video game memory?

Speaking with media at this week’s Tokyo Game Show, Sonic Creative Officer Takashi Iizuka explained how the franchise was nearly cancelled until the popularity of the 2020 movie thrust Sonic back into the hearts and minds of fans all over the globe.

“There had been good times, and there had been bad times … during the worst times, I was told by the higher-ups that we should cancel the entire franchise. I had to fight within the organization to keep the franchise as long as possible,” said Iizuka. “The biggest milestone for me was the first movie … that had been a great hit and definitely changed the course of this franchise.”

While opinions may vary on that first movie, it earned $320 million and was the first of three films so far – with another on the way on March 19, 2027.

Now celebrating 35 years, we can all thank the 2020 movie for keeping Sonic running as long as he has!
