Sonic X Shadow Generations Update: And They’re Off!

The boys were back in town, but they’re already back on the road en route to Sega HQ.

By The LRG Team

The second build of our retooled Sonic X Shadow Generations statue arrived right as expected—just after last week’s post went live—and it looked every bit as good as the preview pictures led us to believe.

By why take our word for it? Here’s the real thing, right there on the left, compared to the original statue on the right, hanging out in what may or may not be the Green Hills Zone:

A little caveat here: the 3D-printed material the manufacturer uses for prototype builds ended up a little worse for the wear after its long express trip to LRG headquarters. That obviously won’t be an issue for the final statue (which will be fully manufactured, not just a fragile 3D print). But kindly disregard any dings or flaws you might spot here.

There are a lot of subtle but distinct improvements to this new version, beginning with the sculpts. Those may not necessarily show up in digital photos, but they’re night-and-day in person. And every paint app looks much better! The paint is more precise now in terms of placement and size. And the colors look perfect, from Sonic’s blues to the more vivid reds throughout. And the gold accents have a brighter, more metallic quality to them—actually looking like gold rather than, say, oiled brass.

What you can’t see in pictures is that the new statue is considerably heftier than the original. Most of the new weight comes from the base, which is heavier than the first statue’s and has a more solid interior structure to offer firm support for Sonic and Shadow.

We did spot one or two minor paint errors (like an off-center Dreamcast logo application), but those are easy fixes. And so, we’ve sent the boys on their way to Sega headquarters for feedback and notes to take us into our (hopefully) final round of fine-tuning before we move to full manufacturing and assembly in this well-padded box:

Of course, we’ll let you know what the keepers of all things Sonic say about the sample once we hear back ourselves.
